Beyond Product Analysis : Turning data into better adviser decisions

Effective structured product analysis goes beyond identifying products with attractive headline returns. It is about transforming product data into meaningful insights that allow advisers to make informed, consistent and appropriate decisions on behalf of their clients. Structured Edge supports this process through its selection record, head-to-head comparisons, and portfolio reports, helping advisers build a more complete picture of how individual products work, the trade-offs they present and how they may fit within a client’s wider financial goals.

The new look Structured Edge selection record documents the initial research phase, the client’s stated objectives, the rationale for selection and the products shortlisted from the wider market. Rather than focusing solely on the final product recommendations, it provides visibility into the decision-making process. This helps demonstrate how product selection has been driven by the client’s requirements and relevant product characteristics.

The head-to-head comparison allows advisers to examine the differences between products on Structured Edge in a consistent way. Products may share similar objectives or appear comparable at first glance, yet their underlying features can produce different outcomes. Comparing these features such as capital protection, underlying assets, maturity, barriers, potential returns, autocall conditions and counterparty exposure helps advisers understand where those differences lie. It also provides a high-level assessment of the relationship between potential returns and risks, including the circumstances in which a product may not perform as the client expects.

The new Structured Edge portfolio report adds another important dimension by moving the analysis beyond individual products to consider client’s structured product portfolios. Advisers must consider how products interact with clients’ existing investments and wider financial circumstances. Portfolio-level analysis helps highlight overlapping exposures to markets, indices, counterparties and investment strategies, as well as potential concentrations of risk. It can also help advisers assess whether a proposed investment complements existing holdings, contributes to diversification or introduces risks that may already be present elsewhere in the portfolio.

This broader perspective is particularly valuable when considering structured products with similar underlying assets and investment objectives. Selecting several products with appealing individual characteristics does not automatically create a well-balanced portfolio. Understanding their combined exposures, investment timeframes and potential outcomes allows advisers to assess product selections in the context of overall portfolio, rather than considering them on their own.

The selection record explains why products entered the shortlist, the head-to-head comparison demonstrates how the alternatives differ, and the portfolio report helps establish how a potential investment fits within the wider financial picture. Together, these tools provide a more comprehensive evidence base for adviser decision-making.

Structured Edge’s reporting supports clearer client communication and a more transparent advice process. Advisers can explain not only why a particular product has been considered, but also which alternatives were assessed, what trade-offs influenced the decision, what risks remain and how the investment relates to the client’s broader objectives. This creates a stronger link between product analysis, product recommendation, and ongoing portfolio oversight, helping ensure that decisions are based on a considered assessment of the available evidence. The objective is not simply to find a suitable product, but to understand why it is suitable, what could affect its outcome and how it contributes to the clients’ overall financial goals.
